Relocation is undoubtedly stressful no matter how much you plan ahead. On top of that if you also have to move your car, the stress can be unbearable. Yet some preparation beforehand can reduce the stress level and help you with a smooth relocation not just for the family but for your car too. Here are some steps which are meant to ease your tension related to auto transport:

Step 1: Your first step is to decide whether you will drive the car your self or will hire the services of an auto transport company. both would take the same amount of time, but weather and road conditions may delay the whole operation, which is applicable to both options. The best part about hiring the services of a professional is that you can then relax and not worry too much about your car transportation, and devote your time to other important issues related to relocation.

Step 2: Next you call up at least 5 reputed auto transport companies and brief them about the kind of car you wish to transport, the distance it has to travel, the way you prefer it to be moved and the tentative date when you want to move your car. You could also ask the company if it could provide any references of past customers, with whom you could check back.

Step 3: Short list 3 companies from these 5 and check their past track record with Better Business Bureau. Through this back ground check, you will come to know about their records regarding addressing customer grievances.

Step 4: Fix up the date of car pick up at least 2 weeks in advance. also make sure that there is someone to take delivery of the vehicle when it arrives at the new destination.

Step 5: The auto transport company will give you an Inspection report, which details the condition of the car including the condition of the seat, the exteriors, tires as well as mileage and gas gauge. You need to check this report thoroughly and then sign as your agreement with the findings. This report is important in case of any damage done during transit; this can be your ready proof, which will be seen by the insurance company.

Step 6: Talk to the auto transporting company regarding insurance coverage of your vehicle during transit and check the deductibles. You must read the insurance policy carefully. It also makes sense to talk to your existing car insurance company to see whether ‘in transit’ cars are also covered by your current policy.

Step 7: You must be ready with a cashier’s check for giving to the transporting company on the day of the car pick up. Some car moving companies want the entire amount upfront whereas some companies demand a token amount as advance and the balance on delivery. If this is your case, then have some ready with the balance amount when the car reaches its destination.

Step 8: It is to be noted that a car carrier is about 75 feet long, which makes it difficult to drive in to your doorway or even in the lane where you live. This can mean that you have to drive your car to the nearing parking lot or even to the nearest terminal from where the car will be loaded on to the carrier.

Step 9: Get a firm delivery date from the auto transport company. though they may fail to keep their promise, at least they will be sure that the customer is keen on a firm commitment.

Step 10: Remove all the detachable parts of the car as well as any personal belonging which you may have left in the car.

Step 11: Once the car has reached the destination, it is your responsibility to check the car thoroughly before finally signing and closing the deal. It is nearly impossible to file any insurance claim later – so you must check the post-delivery condition with the Inspection report which had been handed over to you.
